Who are the Grateful Dead?

The Grateful Dead was an American rock band founded in 1965 in Palo Alto, California. They were known for their eclectic style, blending elements of rock, folk, bluegrass, blues, country, and jazz, often with extended improvisational jams in their live performances. This unique, varied sound, along with their dedicated fanbase (“Dead heads”), made the Grateful Dead iconic figures in the counterculture movement of the 1960s and 1970s. They are widely considered one of the most influential rock bands of all time.

Is the Grateful Dead still a band?

After lead singer and guitarist Jerry Garcia’s death in 1995, the Grateful Dead officially disbanded. However, the remaining members of the band have toured consistently under other related names, such as The Other Ones, The Dead, and more recently, Dead & Company, which famously also includes singer-songwriter John Mayer.

Who are the members of the Grateful Dead?

The Grateful Dead’s five founding members were guitarists Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir, bassist Phil Lesh, drummer Bill Kreutzmann, and multi-instrumentalist Ron “Pigpen” McKernan. According to bassist Phil Lesh, the name Grateful Dead was suggested by Jerry Garcia after he saw it in a folklore dictionary. The dictionary definition was “the soul of a dead person, or his angel, showing gratitude to someone who, as an act of charity, arranged their burial.” This refers to a common myth, present in many cultures around the world, where a traveler comes upon a corpse that is unburied or otherwise mistreated, usually due to unpaid debts, or perhaps due to a task or obligation the dead person left uncompleted. The traveler then pays the debt, completes the task, and/or buries the body, and is later thanked and/or assisted by the spirit of the dead person.
