Can I attach a trailer to my bike?
Yes! It depends on the type of bike and the type of trailer, but the overwhelming majority of retrospec bicycles and electric bicycles are compatible with our kids’ trailers, pet trailers, and cargo trailers. A simple, secure coupler fits any bike wheel from 20” to 29” in diameter, though these trailers are not recommended for bikes with thru-axles. See the “Specification” section at the bottom of each trailer’s product page for a full list of compatible bike models.
What are bike trailers used for?
Bike trailers have many uses. Some riders use them as a safe way to bring young children on bike rides. The American Pediatric Association recommends bicycle-towed trailers over bicycle seats for young children, calling this the safest option for young riders.
Others use bike trailers to carry furry friends, and still others use bike trailers to haul cargo, such as camping gear, groceries, or anything else that won’t fit on your rear rack or handlebar basket. Cargo trailers like Rover Hauler are also weatherproof, protecting your belongings from the rain.

Can any bike pull a trailer?
Not necessarily. Compatibility varies by bike and trailer. The coupler included with our bike trailers fits virtually any rear bicycle wheel from 20” to 29” in diameter, but isn’t recommended for bikes with thru-axles. The majority of current-gen retrospec bicycles and electric bicycles are compatible with our bike trailers. See the “Specification” section at the bottom of each trailer’s product page for a full list of compatible bike models.
How safe are kids’ bike trailers?
Kids’ bike trailers are extremely safe if designed well and used properly. Ultimately, the safety of a kids’ bike trailer comes down to the adult rider who is towing the trailer, but per the American Academy of Pediatrics, bike trailers are much safer than placing a young child in a bike seat.
Our Rover Kids’ Bike Trailer features a padded 5-point seat belt harness, reflective fabric, built-in safety reflectors, sturdy steel components, and a high visibility flag, as well as robust 16” wheels and front and side shields to protect kids from wind, rain, and bugs.

How hard is it to pull a kids’ bike trailer?
It’s certainly harder than riding a bike normally, but pulling a kids’ bike trailer is nothing to be afraid of. Expect added resistance when getting started and when climbing hills, but on relatively flat terrain, you shouldn’t have a problem!
Start with shorter rides on flat terrain to get used to the feeling of pulling the trailer. Be sure to shift to lower gears when starting, stopping, or climbing hills. In addition, you’ll need to leave added stopping distance when towing a trailer, and be extra cautious when turning or maneuvering in tight spaces. If you’re concerned about the added weight of a trailer behind your bike, look into an electric bicycle, which can do the pedaling for you!

How old should a kid be to ride in a bike trailer?
Children should be at least one year old to be towed in a bike trailer, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. By this age, they should be able to sit well unsupported and have a neck strong enough to support a lightweight helmet. Be sure the helmet you purchase adheres to U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) standards.
How many kids can ride in a bike trailer?
Most kids’ bike trailers can hold one or two passengers. Our Rover and Rover Plus bike trailers both come in single child and double child models, with 40 pounds and 80 pounds of weight capacity, respectively.
Should a child wear a helmet in a bike trailer?
Helmet laws for children vary by state, but regardless, children should always wear a bike helmet when riding in a bike trailer. Even with careful riding, accidents can happen. A helmet can protect against head injuries in case of a fall, collision, or rollover. Wearing a helmet in the trailer also helps children establish a habit of wearing a helmet whenever they're on wheels, promoting lifelong safety.
Can you put a carseat in a bike trailer?
No, you should not place a carseat in a bike trailer. Kids’ bike trailers have built-in harnesses, so there is no need to add a seat, and doing so will increase risk of an accident. Our Kids’ Bike Trailers have an integrated five-point padded harness to keep your child secure and comfortable during rides.
How much weight can a child bike trailer hold?
This varies from product to product, but our Rover and Rover Plus kids’ bike trailers can hold either 40 pounds (single trailer) or 80 pounds (double trailer).
Are bike trailers safe for dogs?
Yes! In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics actually recommends young children ride in bike trailers instead of bicycle seats, and if bike trailers are safe enough for humans, they’re safe enough for dogs, too. Introduce your dog to the trailer gradually, don’t exceed the maximum weight capacity, and make sure to take rest stops during rides.
Our Rover Waggin’ Pet Bike Trailer features an internal leash, wide bed, and anti-slip floor to keep your furry friend secure and safe. A rear doggy door provides no-hassle entry and exit. Meanwhile, the weather-resistant shell includes 2-in-1 canopy and mesh shielding, so your pup can enjoy the view without unwanted critters or rain.

What is the best way to carry a dog on a bike?
The best way to carry a dog on a bike is in a pet bike trailer, which will provide a stable and enclosed space for them to ride. The best dog bike trailers keep your furry friend secure and comfortable, with integrated leashes, no-slip floors, and weather-resistant canopies to protect them from wind, rain, and direct sunlight. If your dog is extremely small (~10lbs), however, you could consider placing them in a backpack, or a handlebar basket.
How do you get a dog in a bike trailer?
The rear doggy door on our Rover Waggin’ Pet Bike Trailer makes it easy for your furry friend to hop on board, but if they’re reluctant, don’t worry. Getting your dog comfortable riding in a bike trailer can take time.
For starters, try placing treats inside the trailer with the mesh closed and waiting for your dog to smell the treats, so that when you open the door, they actually want to get inside. Their first few times in the trailer, don’t try to “ride” at all. Let them become comfortable hopping in and out, and comfortable with the door closed. Avoid stress and give your dog time to build trust. Keep a close watch on your dog's behavior, and start with short, slow rides to gradually build up their comfort and confidence.

The coupler on our Rover Waggin’ Pet Bike Trailer is compatible with the overwhelming majority of retrospecebikes. See the “Specification” section at the bottom of each trailer’s product page for a full list of trailer-friendly bike and ebike models.
What is a bike cargo trailer?
A bike cargo trailer is a towable carrier that attaches to the back of a bicycle or ebike. It allows you to increase your bike's carrying capacity, transporting items like groceries, beach gear, school supplies, or camping equipment.
Unlike pet bike trailers or kids’ bike trailers, a cargo trailer is specifically designed for gear and supplies. They typically connect to the bike's rear axle using a hitch, and can be easily removed when not needed. Our Rover Cargo Hauler can hold up to 80 pounds of cargo, has interior D-rings to secure cargo and a waterproof cover to protect from rain, and collapses for compact storage when not in use.
