The Retrospec Story: Why We Build the Way We Do
If you've been searching for an electric bike or a stand up paddle board and kept landing on retrospec, you might be asking yourself: who actually is this brand? That question comes up a lot, and it's a fair one. There are a lot of options out there, and a lot of them look the same.
So here's the real answer, straight from us.
It Started With a Simple Question
retrospec founder Ely Khakshouri grew up chasing storms with his grandfather on California weekends. If there was snow in the mountains, they were there. That connection to the outdoors ran deep, and it didn't leave when he got to college.
What did leave was the budget. He wanted a bike he actually liked, but couldn't afford anything that fit. So in 2009, he saved up $8,000 from his first few jobs, built a small batch of bikes, and hand-delivered them out of his grandfather's run-down adventure van to local students and campus shops.
That's not a brand myth. That's just what happened.
The question behind all of it was pretty simple: why does good outdoor gear have to cost so much? And why does the outdoor world feel like it was built for a certain type of person, with a certain size bank account? Those questions didn't go away. They became the whole point.
The Outside Should Be for Everyone, Not Just the Gear-Obsessed
A lot of outdoor gear brands are built for a specific kind of customer. The ultra-athlete. The hardcore enthusiast. The person who already knows exactly what they want and just needs somewhere to spend a lot of money on it.
That's not who retrospec is for.
We're for the person who hasn't ridden a bike in years and wants to try commuting. The family that wants to get out on the water without dropping a thousand dollars just to see if they like it. The dad who wants to ride with his kids on a Saturday and not feel like he needs to train for six months first.
The outside is for everyone. But not everyone feels comfortable out there, and a lot of that comes down to gear that signals you don't belong if you don't know exactly what you're doing. We set out to fix that.
How We Think About Product Design
Every product at retrospec starts with the same question: what does this person actually need to have a great experience outside? Not what sounds impressive in a spec sheet, and not what the hardcore community has decided is the gold standard. What actually helps a real person, on a real ride, on a real Saturday morning?
That thinking shows up in how we build our Electric Bikes. Smooth, quiet rear hub motors. Intuitive pedal assist with multiple levels so you can dial in exactly how much help you want. Step-through frame options that make it easy to hop on and off. UL-certified batteries. These aren't just features, they're answers to questions real riders actually have.
It's the same with our inflatable Paddle Boards. Puncture-resistant PVC. Drop-stitch construction that stays firm when inflated. Wide, stable decks that give you room to find your footing without panicking. Everything packed down into a bag you can toss in your trunk. The goal is always the same: make it easier to say yes to going outside.
When you're wondering why to buy an Electric Bike, the answer isn't just about specs. It's about what gets you outside more often, more comfortably, and with less standing in the way.
Why Price Is Part of the Mission
There's a reason we put so much energy into keeping our gear accessible on price. It's not just a business decision. It's the mission.
Ely grew up watching his parents sacrifice to buy overpriced gear that was just good enough. When he became a parent himself, he was frustrated by how expensive quality kids' gear was, and how fast kids grow out of it. That frustration pushed retrospec to build the best value it could across every category.
When an affordable Electric Bike is actually well-built, more people can swap their car commute for a ride. More people can explore the coast on a Paddle Board without needing to spend like it's a luxury purchase. More families can get outside together. The price point isn't a compromise on quality. It's what makes all of that possible.
That's why we put the same care into a commuter EBike that we do into our higher-end models. And why every Paddle Board ships with everything you need to get on the water: board, paddle, pump, leash, and travel bag. No extra stops, no extra costs.
The Gear We Make and Why It Matters
From those first campus bike deliveries, retrospec has grown into a full lineup of outdoor gear. But the thread running through all of it is the same.
Electric Bikes
City EBikes, fat tire EBikes, beach cruiser EBikes, commuter EBikes, folding EBikes, and hybrid models, all designed to get more people riding more often with less friction.
Pedal bikes
Beach cruisers, city bikes, fixie bikes, and commuter bikes built for real life, not race day.
Inflatable Paddle Boards
From the Weekender lineup for flat water and fitness paddling to kayaks, inflatable hammocks, and inflatable docks, our full water collection is built around one idea: more time outside, less time figuring out how to get there.
Skate
Skateboards, longboards, and cruisers built for the pavement under your feet, whether you're carving a path to class or just seeing where the road goes.
Snow
Snowshoes and trekking poles that make winter feel like a reason to get outside, not a reason to stay in.
Camp
Coolers, sleeping bags, hiking poles, and camp gear built to keep you comfortable from the trailhead to the campsite and everywhere in between.
Kids gear
Because getting kids outside early matters, and parents shouldn't have to pay a premium just to make it happen.
Every category follows the same design philosophy: lead with the experience, build in the quality, and keep it in reach.
What "Built to Last" Actually Means to Us
There's a version of affordable gear that cuts corners to hit a price point. You've probably owned something like it. It works for a season, then falls apart, and you end up spending more replacing it than you would have on something solid in the first place.
That's not what we're building.
"Built to last" at retrospec means every Electric Bike ships UL-certified. It means Paddle Boards use double-layer PVC rails because a board that holds up to real use is worth more than one that looks great in photos. It means our drivetrain components come from trusted names like Shimano so your shifting stays smooth season after season. It means we test before we sell.
If you're curious about what to look for in a well-built EBike, our EBike buying guide walks through exactly what separates a solid build from one that's just priced to move.
What durability looks like at retrospec:
UL-certified batteries on all Electric Bikes
Puncture-resistant PVC and drop-stitch construction on all inflatable Paddle Boards
Shimano drivetrains on bikes and EBikes
Hydraulic disc brakes on commuter and performance EBike models
Comprehensive warranties and real customer support
This Is Just the Beginning
When people ask whether retrospec is a good brand, we get it. There's a lot of noise out there, and plenty of brands that talk a better game than they play. The best answer we can give isn't a marketing line. It's the gear itself, the people who ride and paddle it, and the story that's been building since a college kid loaded bikes into his grandfather's van in Southern California.
We're not trying to be the loudest brand in the room. We're trying to be the most trusted one. And we think the way you build that trust is by making gear that works, pricing it so more people can actually use it, and showing up for your customers when they need you.
That's what we've been doing since 2009. That's what we'll keep doing.
