What are the legal requirements for bike lights?
What are lux for bike lights? What is the difference between lux and lumens?
The key difference is that lumens describe a light's total power, while lux describes the brightness or concentration of that light on a specific surface. So lux takes into account both the lumen output and the beam pattern of the light. (One lux = one lumen per square meter.) Lumens are more commonly advertised, but a lux number gives you a better idea of how effectively a headlight illuminates the path in front of you, which is why our Beam Bike Light Kits are advertised in lux.

What is IPX rating?
- IPX0: No protection from water.
- IPX1: Protected against vertically falling water drops.
- IPX2: Protected against vertically falling water drops when tilted up to 15º
- IPX3: Protected against spraying water.
- IPX4: Protected against splashing water from any direction.
- IPX5: Protected against direct spray from low-pressure water jets.
Essentially, the higher the number after IPX, the better the protection against water. (Our Beam Bike Lights are rated to IPX5!) Ingress Protection does go up to higher ratings (6, 7, 8), but IPX5 is more than sufficient to ensure performance while riding in the rain.
