What are hybrid bikes?

Hybrid bikes are a mix of a mountain bike and a road bike, built for riding over a variety of terrain. In general, hybrid bikes are designed for versatility and comfort, making them suitable for commuting, recreation, and exercise on paved roads and light trails.

What are fitness bikes?

Fitness bikes are designed for exercise and recreation on paved roads and bike paths. Compared to more performance-oriented road bikes, fitness bikes have an increased focus on versatility and comfort, with an upright riding position, wider, cushioned seats, and sometimes step-through frames.

What is the difference between a hybrid bike and a fitness bike?

The main difference is subtle. Hybrid bikes tend to be slightly more versatile, with wider tires for handling a wider variety of terrains and more comfort-focused features, while fitness bikes have a slightly more performance-oriented design, with narrower tires and lighter frames for better speed on paved roads.

Are hybrid & fitness bikes good for beginners?

Yes, hybrid and fitness bikes are excellent choices for beginners due to their comfortable riding position, ease of use, versatility, and affordable price point. We offer eight hybrid and fitness bike models, including high-end commuter bikes, laidback step-through models, speedy fitness bikes, rugged gravel bikes, and more.

What are the advantages of hybrid & fitness bikes?

There are many benefits to riding a bike, including exercise and improved cardiovascular health, reduced impact on joints compared to running, environmentally friendly and cost-effective transportation, and simply a fun way to experience the world around you.

For hybrid and fitness bikes in particular, the main draw is versatility. Hybrid bikes are capable and comfortable riding both paved roads and light trails, while fitness bikes offer the speed and performance of road bikes without the drawback in comfort. (Many Retrospec models, such as the popular Atlas 21 Speed, are classified as both a hybrid and fitness bike.)

What are the disadvantages of hybrid & fitness bikes?

Hybrid and fitness bikes sit near the center of the comfort-performance spectrum, so you may want to consider looking at another style of bicycle if you’re looking specifically for a bicycle to provide one or the other.

Beach cruisers, for example, will be more comfortable for casual riding, road bikes will be able to reach faster speeds on paved roads, and mountain/gravel bikes will perform better off-road. You might also consider an electric bike if you’d like additional power and ease for longer rides or commutes, or a folding bike if storage is a primary concern.

What frame materials are used in hybrid and fitness bikes?

Hybrid and fitness bikes typically use aluminum alloy frames, which offer a good balance of durability, weight, and affordability.

What type of brakes do hybrid and fitness bikes have?

The majority of our hybrid and fitness bikes use hydraulically actuated disc brakes for more reliable stopping power in all weather conditions. The only exception to this are a few legacy models, like the older Atlas Fitness Hybrid and standard Baron Comfort Hybrid and Step-Through models. These models use aluminum alloy linear side-pull calipers (rim brakes).

What kind of gears do hybrid and fitness bikes have?

The best hybrid and fitness bikes have multiple gears to allow riders to adjust their pedaling effort for different terrains and inclines, and in general, have slightly easier gear ratios than road bikes, making it easier to climb hills. All our hybrid and fitness models offer 21 gears for maximum versatility. The only exception is our eight-speed Amok Gravel Adventure Bike, which leans more into gravel and off-road riding than our other hybrid models.

Do hybrid and fitness bikes come with fenders?

Due to their higher focus on performance compared to beach cruisers and city bikes, hybrid and fitness bikes typically don’t come equipped with fenders. Fenders add weight and increase drag.

What accessories can I add to my hybrid or fitness bike?

A variety of accessories can be added to your hybrid or fitness bike to enhance comfort, convenience, and safety. These include baskets, head and tail lights, racks, kickstands, phone mounts, and water bottle cages. You can also purchase bike trailers to tow cargo, pets, or children.

What size hybrid or fitness bike do I need?

Purchasing the right size bike is crucial for comfort and performance. Like all bikes, hybrid and fitness bikes are sized by measuring inseam (the distance between the bottom of the foot and the top inside of the leg). At the bottom of every product page, you’ll find a “Sizing” tab to help you measure. If trying a bike in person, when you stand over it you should have around one inch of clearance from the bike’s top tube. This means your inseam measurement should be one inch more than the bike’s standover height.

Where can I buy a hybrid or fitness bike?

You can purchase Retrospec hybrid and fitness bikes online or from authorized retailers. Remember, retailer inventory may differ from what is available online, but any Retrospec model online can be shipped directly to dealers, even if not currently in stock. Please contact your local dealer directly to inquire about their in-person inventory and product availability.

What is the price range for hybrid and fitness bikes?

Most high-quality hybrid and fitness bikes range from $300 to $400. Hybrid off-road performance models, like the Amok Gravel Adventure Bike, are slightly more expensive ($499).

How do I maintain my hybrid or fitness bike?

Regular maintenance is essential to keep your bike running smoothly and safely, but maintenance for a hybrid and fitness bike is no different than for any other bike. Keep your tires inflated to the recommended pressure, lubricate your chain regularly, inspect your brakes and gears for proper function, and keep your bike clean. In addition, store your bike in a cool, dry location, out of direct sunlight.

How often should I take my hybrid or fitness bike for service?

It’s recommended to take your bike to a dealer or specialist for a complete checkup after 25 hours of hard off-road riding or 50 hours of road riding. At the bare minimum, your bike should be serviced by a professional at least once per year. It’s also best to take a new bike in for a checkup 30 days after purchasing (or after 3-5 hours of off-road/10-15 hours of on-road use).

Can I fix a flat tire on a hybrid or fitness bike?

Yes, with the right tools and knowledge, you can fix a flat tire on your hybrid or fitness bike just like any other bicycle. There are many resources available online and in bike shops to teach you how to fix a flat tire, but the basic steps involve removing the wheel, deflating and removing the inner tube, patching or replacing the tube, and then reinstalling the wheel.

Beyond this, there are many resources available online and in libraries to teach you about bike maintenance. You can also consult a mechanic at your local bike shop.

What kind of handlebars do hybrid and fitness bikes have?

Hybrid and fitness bikes typically have flat handlebars, which provide an upright riding position for comfort and good visibility of road hazards. They are heavier than the drop-bar handlebars commonly found on road bikes, but allow you to sit upright, reducing strain on wrists, hands, back, and shoulders.

Do hybrid and fitness bikes have suspension systems?

It depends. Hybrids with a focus on comfort, like the Barron Plus, often have front suspension forks to absorb bumps and vibrations for a smoother ride. This can be especially beneficial for riders who plan on tackling varied terrain or prioritize maximum comfort. Fitness hybrids like the Atlas or gravel bike hybrids like the Amok, on the other hand, don’t typically feature suspension systems, reducing weight, cost, and necessary maintenance.

Are hybrid and fitness bikes lightweight?

Aluminum frames used in most Retrospec hybrid and fitness bikes contribute to a lighter weight compared to steel frames. This makes them easier to maneuver and lift, especially when storing your bike indoors. Compared to other bike models, hybrid and fitness bikes sit in the center of the spectrum. They are slightly heavier than most road bikes, but lightweight compared to cruisers and mountain bikes.

Can I fold up a hybrid or fitness bike?

While you cannot fold a hybrid bike, we do sell a popular folding model, the Judd Folding Bike. Folding bikes like the Judd are a great option for those with limited storage space. You can fold this lightweight bike completely in half and stow it under your desk, in your closet, or in your trunk with ease.

What are some tips for storing a hybrid or fitness bike?

When storing your hybrid or fitness bike, choose a dry and secure location out of direct sunlight. The easiest way is to keep your bike upright using a kickstand, but if you have multiple bikes, you’ll probably want to purchase a bike rack.

In tight living situations, like a small apartment or dorm, you can always find room for the Judd Folding Bike. You could also consider removing the front wheel of a hybrid or fitness bike to make the bike more compact, or store it on your vehicle with a car bike rack (if your car is parked indoors or in an otherwise safe location). If storing your bike outside, even for short periods of time, be sure to secure it with a bike lock.
