A folding bike is a bike that incorporates collapsing parts—typically including top tube, pedals, and handlebars—so it can be folded and stored without taking up much space. You can stash folding bikes in your car trunk, closet, or even under your bed. If storage and portability are your main concern, folding bikes can’t be beat! (In addition to traditional folding bikes, there are also folding ebikes, which offer the added benefit of electric motors!)

How easy is it to fold and unfold a folding bike?
It’s very simple to fold and unfold a folding bike. There are three main collapsing points: the top tube folds in half, the handlebars fold down to nest parallel to the bike, and the pedals fold upwards for a compact, lightweight package. This process can be accomplished in a couple of minutes.
Do folding bikes break easily?
No, folding bikes don't break easily. Our folding bikes are designed with robust aluminum frames and simple, single-speed drivetrains, with reinforced folding mechanisms to minimize wear. Like any bike, a folding bike will require proper care and maintenance, but you won’t see reduced durability compared to a normal bicycle.

Can you ride long distances on a folding bike?
A folding bike can certainly handle long rides, but these bikes are built for portability, not comfort and performance. Their smaller, lower frames and wheels mean they won’t be as comfy as models purpose-built for long rides, like city bikes and road bikes. Are folding bikes adjustable?

How do you lock a folding bike?
Locking a folding bike is essentially the same as locking a regular bike. You'll want to use a high-quality bike lock—ideally a U-lock or chain lock—to secure the frame and at least one wheel to a solid, immovable object like a bike rack or sturdy pole. If your folding bike has quick-release wheels or a seat, it's wise to secure those components with additional locks or skewers. For enhanced security, you might consider using two locks of differing types. Finally, park your bike in a well-lit and visible area whenever possible.
Do folding bikes go slower?
Folding bikes are designed for portability, not speed and performance. So yes, all things being equal, you’ll probably be able to ride faster on a road bike, city bike, hybrid, or other traditional bicycle than on a folding bike.

Can folding bikes go uphill?
Of course! Because their wheels are smaller than normal bicycles, folding bikes essentially have lower effective gearing than normal bikes, so it’s easy to pedal uphill.
Are folding bikes good for off-road?
Normal folding bikes are best suited for smooth surfaces, like asphalt and concrete. That said,retrospec does offer an off-road-capable folding ebike, Jax Rev. Do folding bikes have a weight limit?
All bikes have a weight limit. This varies depending on the model, but in general you can expect a slightly lower limit for a folding bike compared to a normal bicycle. The maximum recommended weight for our Judd Folding Bike is 250 lbs.
Do folding bikes have gears?
Because folding bikes are focused on compact size and portability, they’re usually single speed, meaning they have one fixed gear. This minimizes weight, bulk, and price, and also results in reduced maintenance.
Can I take my folding bike on a plane?
It depends on the airline, but usually yes! If your bike fits in a suitcase that meets the airline's size and weight restrictions, you can always check it as luggage. You could also bring your folding bike as a carry-on, but you may need to remove the seat and loosen the handlebar clamp to get it down to size.
Can I take my folding bike on a train?
Yes, depending on the carrier. On Amtrak trains, for example, bikes are allowed both in checked baggage and on trains with walk-on bicycle service. Folding bikes under the dimensions of 34” x 15” x 48” (like our Judd Folding Bike) are also permitted as carry-on luggage.
