What is the best way to carry things on your ebike?

The best way to carry things on your ebike depends on what you want to carry. There are a variety of ways to carry your belongings, including bike bags, baskets, and bike cargo trailers. But no matter what you’re carrying, a rear rack is a good idea. Ebike rear racks are a requirement if you want to attach panniers and trunk bags to your ebike. They are also necessary if you want to attach baskets like our EverythingBin. Simply put, a rear rack is the best starting point to transform your ebike into a versatile commuter!

What is an ebike rear rack?

An ebike rear rack is a frame-like structure attached to the rear of an electric bike, designed to provide a platform for carrying cargo. Typically made of metal, the best ebike rear racks allow riders to securely transport items using panniers, trunk bags, and baskets. A good rear rack increases the ebike's utility, transforming it from a simple mode of transportation to a versatile cargo-carrying vehicle. A rear rack's robust design is crucial, especially on ebikes, as they often carry heavier loads and require stable support to ensure safe and efficient transport.

Do ebikes need special rear racks?

Some standard rear racks can be fitted onto ebikes, but it’s best to use racks designed explicitly for ebikes. EBike-specific rear racks are engineered to handle the additional weight that ebikes usually carry. They feature stronger materials and more robust construction to ensure stability and safety, especially when carrying heavier loads. They’re also designed to integrate with your ebike's frame and electrical system, providing a more secure, aesthetically pleasing fit. So although it’s not always mandatory, using a rear rack designed for ebikes provides optimal support and safety.

Are ebike rear racks worth it?

Yes, ebike rear racks are very worthwhile if you plan on carrying anything beyond what fits in your pockets! They significantly enhance the practicality of your ebike by allowing you to easily carry groceries, a change of clothes, or other essential items without needing a backpack. This added utility makes commuting, running errands, or even light touring much more convenient and comfortable.

Do all ebike rear racks fit all ebikes?

Not all ebike rear racks will fit all ebikes. With retrospec, it’s easy to find out which racks work for your bike. If you see an ebike rear rack you like, the product description will list the models of retrospec ebikes it’s compatible with, as will the “Specifications” section at the bottom of the page.

Do any ebikes come with rear racks?

Yes! Many ebikes designed for commuting will come with a rear rack pre-installed. Our electric city bike, Beaumont Rev 2, comes with a rear rack, as do our electric commuter bikes.

How to install an ebike rear rack?

Installing our ebike rear racks is simple. It only requires placing the rack over your bike’s rear frame, and tightening a few bolts. That said, the exact process will depend on the ebike rear rack you choose. See your Owner's Manual for complete installation instructions.

Can I put an ebike basket on a rear rack?

Yes. Some ebike baskets go on the front of your bike, ahead of the handlebars, but others—like our EverythingBin—are installed at the back, on top of your ebike rear rack.

What to put on a rear ebike rack?

You can attach pannier bags on the sides to hold groceries, work essentials like a laptop, a change of clothes, or touring gear. Alternatively, a trunk bag or basket can be mounted on top for smaller items, lunch, or quick shopping trips. For bulky or irregularly shaped objects like a yoga mat or a small box, you could strap them directly onto the rack platform using bungee cords or cargo nets. Some racks are also compatible with specific child bike seats.

Can I carry items on my ebike rear rack without a basket or panniers?

Yes, absolutely. You don't need a basket to carry items on your ebike rear rack! A rear rack basket is definitely best for small items, but larger items can be secured directly onto the rack using bungee cords, straps, or cargo nets. This is the best way to carry boxes, small coolers, rolled-up mats, or other awkwardly shaped objects.

How much weight can ebike rear racks hold?

The weight ebike rear racks can hold will vary depending on make and model. retrospec ebike racks range between 22 lbs and 55 lbs in carrying capacity. See your rear rack’s Owner’s Manual or product page for specifications.

Can someone sit on the rear rack of an ebike?

No, you should not let someone sit on the rear rack of an ebike. The best ebike racks are designed for carrying cargo, and have weight limits typically ranging from 40 to 60 pounds (18 to 27 kg). This is far below the weight of even a small adult or teenager. Exceeding this limit can damage the bike rack or frame. More importantly, it is highly unsafe for both the rider and the person sitting on the rack, creating instability, increasing the risk of falls, and potentially causing serious injury if limbs get caught in the wheel. Racks lack the necessary safety features for passengers. If you’re looking for a way to transport your children with you on your bike, consider a child bike seat or kids’ bike trailer.

Do you need a rear rack for panniers on an ebike?

Yes, you always need a rear rack to use panniers (also known as side bags or saddlebags) on an ebike. Panniers are designed with hooks, clips, and stabilizing systems that are specifically made to attach to the structure of a bicycle rack. The rack provides the necessary stable platform and mounting points to hold the panniers safely away from your wheel and allows them to carry weight effectively. There is no standard or safe way to attach pannier bags to your bike without a rack.

Do you need a rear rack for a child bike seat?

It depends on the type of child bike seat you choose. Most child bike seats are rack-mounted and designed to be installed onto a compatible rear cargo rack that can support the combined weight of the seat and child. These are the sturdiest, most stable child bike seats, and the only kind we sell at retrospec. Other rear child seats don’t require a rear rack because they’re frame-mounted (often attaching to the seat tube). This type of child bike seat clamps directly onto the bicycle's frame using a bracket, but is less stable and can flex under heavy loads.

How much do ebike rear racks cost?

EBike rear racks range in price, but you should expect to pay somewhere between $50 and $75 for a reliable, high-quality rack. Remember, if you’re looking to purchase an ebike and equip it with a rear rack, you could also buy an ebike with a pre-installed rear rack, like our electric commuter bikes.

What are ebike rear racks made from?

The best ebike rear racks are made from metal tubing to ensure strength and durability for carrying cargo. The most common material is aluminum alloy (which all retrospec rear racks are made of). Aluminum is an ideal rear rack material because of its good balance of strength, relatively light weight, and excellent corrosion resistance. This makes the best ebike rear rack material for commuting and general use.
