What is an inflatable hammock?
The term “inflatable hammock” can refer to various pieces of gear. Some inflatable hammocks, also called inflatable couches, are designed for use on land. Here at retrospec, our inflatable hammocks are inflatable water hammocks, hybrids between an inflatable dock and a large inflatable tube. Buoyant and water-resistant, these hammocks are a lot like an inflatable dock, but they have an open, mesh-lined center that allows users to partially submerge without having to swim or tread water to stay afloat. Inflatable hammocks are perfect for lounging, sunbathing, and keeping cool and comfortable on the water!
Are inflatable hammocks and water hammocks the same thing?
Not all inflatable hammocks are designed for use on the water, but ours are! These inflated bathing platforms, or “water hammocks,” are made with buoyant, water-resistant materials, like our inflatable docks, but instead of having a flat surface, they have a central opening with a mesh bottom for partial submersion, letting you float and relax in the water.
How do you use an inflatable hammock?
Using an inflatable water hammock is pretty simple! First, inflate it fully using the provided pump to 7-10 PSI, ensuring it's firm, but not overinflated. (You’ll find step-by-step setup instructions in your Owner’s Manual.) Then, gently enter the water and position yourself on the hammock, either sitting or reclining. The mesh center will let you partially submerge, keeping you cool while the inflatable edges provide buoyancy and the mesh keeps you from sinking. Adjust your position for comfort, and enjoy floating and relaxing in the water! Remember to stay in calm waters, and supervise children during use.
What are the differences between inflatable hammocks and inflatable docks?
Inflatable water hammocks and inflatable docks are very similar. In fact, our hammocks and docks in the Siesta family are all designed to be attached to each other with retrospec Tether Connection Straps to form large floating platforms on the water. Both inflatable hammocks and docks are made from the same stable, puncture-resistant AerGlide-Lite material and have textured EVA foam decking. Both also have grab handles and stainless steel D-rings for accessories. The only difference between an inflatable hammock and an inflatable dock is that the hammock has a large hole in the center with a mesh bottom, so you can lounge in the water!
How big are inflatable hammocks?
Our Siesta inflatable hammocks are available in two sizes and shapes, an 8’ by 8’ circle and 10’ by 10’ square (when fully inflated). When deflated and folded, however, they're surprisingly compact, fitting into the included handheld carrying bag for easy transport and storage.
What is the weight limit for inflatable hammocks?
Our Siesta Hammock (8’ by 8’) has a recommended weight capacity of 660 lbs. The larger Siesta Hammock XL (10’ by 10’) has a significantly higher recommended weight capacity of 1,150 lbs.
How many people can fit in an inflatable hammock?
This will depend on the size and weight of the users. Our smaller Siesta Hammock is 8 by 8 feet with a maximum capacity of 660 lbs. Our larger Siesta Hammock XL is 10 by 10 feet with a maximum capacity of 1,150 lbs. Most people will find that two to three adults can comfortably lounge in the smaller Siesta, while four or five can enjoy Siesta XL.
Are inflatable hammocks comfortable?
Inflatable water hammocks are surprisingly comfortable. The inflated deck provides good support for your shoulders, arms, and upper body, while the lower half of your body is in the water, kept afloat by the soft mesh netting. There are a variety of ways you can lounge in your inflatable hammock, but one thing’s for sure… You’ll be comfortable!
How heavy are inflatable hammocks?
Our Siesta Hammock weighs 30 lbs (35 lbs with the included pump, repair kit, & carry bag). Our larger Siesta Hammock XL weighs 49 lbs (54.5 lbs with the included pump, repair kit, & carry bag). Once your hammock is inflated, grab handles on the side make it easy to carry the hammock in and out of the water.
What is the pressure for an inflatable hammock?
Both of our inflatable hammocks have a recommended inflation pressure range of 7 to 10 PSI (pound-force per square inch). Never inflate your hammock above 10 PSI.
How long does it take to inflate an inflatable hammock?
It depends on how fast you pump, but it typically takes around 10 to 15 minutes, give or take, to inflate your hammock with the included dual-action pump. If you want to save time (and effort), try an electric pump, which will inflate your hammock to the PSI of your choice automatically!
What accessories come with an inflatable hammock?
Our inflatable water hammocks come with a dual-action pump with inflate and deflate functions, a repair kit containing a valve wrench and two PVC patches, and a carry bag. You have all the gear you need to get started!
What else should I buy with my inflatable hammock?
With the included accessories (pump, repair kit, & carry bag), you have everything you need to get on the water and lounge in your inflatable hammock. However, you might consider purchasing an electric pump to make inflation faster and easier. You may also want to buy a folding anchor to secure your hammock in the water. Yes! You can connect our Siesta inflatable water hammocks to our Siesta inflatable docks using retrospec Tether Connection Straps, mixing and matching to design the water platform of your choice.
Are inflatable hammocks pet-friendly?
Although the decking on our hammocks is durable and puncture-resistant, our inflatable hammocks are best kept reserved for human use. If you want to bring your furry friends on the water with you, try an inflatable dock!
Are inflatable hammocks safe for children?
Inflatable hammocks are safe for any person (adult or child) who can swim and recreate on the water unsupervised. If your child cannot swim, then we do not recommend they use an inflatable hammock. Ensure all children are supervised and that everyone wears a life vest for maximum safety.
Can I use inflatable hammocks in the ocean?
Yes, you can use inflatable hammocks in any calm and protected body of water, be it ocean, swimming pool, lake, or river. That said, inflatable hammocks are only safe to use on calm water, away from any boat traffic or busy waterways. Waves, rapids, and strong currents may make your hammock capsize and increase your risk of injury. If in the ocean, use your inflatable hammock in a sheltered area, such as a bay or inlet, or anywhere else free of waves. If in a river or somewhere with a current, consider using an anchor to keep your hammock in place.
How long do inflatable hammocks last?
The lifespan of your inflatable hammock comes down to proper care and storage. A well-maintained hammock can last several years or more. Lifespan also depends on the frequency of use and the environment in which the hammock is used. Factors like sun exposure, mildew growth due to improper storage, and rough handling will drastically decrease an inflatable hammock’s lifespan.
How to store an inflatable hammock?
Like any inflatable watercraft, it’s best to store your inflatable hammock deflated. (You can use the “deflate” setting on your dual-action pump to make sure it’s fully deflated.) The key is ensuring the hammock is stored dry and kept in a relatively cool environment, out of direct sunlight. High temperatures and direct sunlight will degrade the hammock’s surface over time, and humidity or moisture can cause mold. See your hammock’s Owner’s Manual for more info on storage, step-by-step.
What are the disadvantages of an inflatable hammock?
Inflatable hammocks are easy to store and transport, affordable, durable, comfortable, and extremely versatile. They do have a few downsides, of course. They have less space for lounging than an inflatable dock, and are heavier and less portable than an inflatable tube.
Do you need to anchor an inflatable hammock?
You don’t need to anchor an inflatable hammock. However, if you want to be sure your platform stays in one place, then using an anchor is a good idea! Our inflatable hammocks are built with underside D-rings to serve as anchor attachment points.
How deep does the water need to be for an inflatable floating dock?
Generally, a minimum water depth of 3 or 4 feet is best for safe use of an inflatable hammock. This allows enough space for the hammock to float freely without scraping the bottom, which can damage the mesh of the hammock, particularly if you’re in a body of water with rocks, branches, or other hazards.
Can you leave an inflatable hammock in the water permanently?
Our inflatable hammocks are designed for temporary use. While the AerGlide-Lite construction and mesh are built to last, keeping your hammock outside and exposed to the elements (sun, wind, rain, etc.) will decrease its lifespan. You could definitely leave it outside for a few days during a weekend trip, for example, but keeping it outside and in the water for weeks on end is not ideal. We recommend removing your hammock from the water and rising and drying it after each use.
