What parts and accessories should I buy with my ebike?
Once you own a retrospec ebike, the only accessory you need is a helmet (safety first)! But there is plenty more ebike gear than can make your bike more versatile and fun. Our ebike parts and accessories page includes gear like bike trailers, bike locks, bike pumps, and car bike racks. We also sell accessories to modify your ebike: handlebar baskets, bike lights, bike bags, child bike seats, rear racks, foot pegs and water bottle cage mounting brackets. In this FAQ page, we’ll answer a few common questions about each of these categories. For more info, see their respective category pages.
Are ebike helmets and bike helmets the same?
In general, there is little to no difference between the helmets worn on pedal bicycles and electric bicycles, and most ebike riders simply wear the same helmet they’d wear on any other bike. Legally, all helmets sold within the U.S. are required to meet the U.S. CPSC Safety Standard for Bicycle Helmets. This safety certification includes crash testing that simulates a typical urban crash scenario at speeds around 10-15 mph. However, this is not the maximum protection threshold. CPSC-approved helmets still offer protection at higher speeds; they are just not guaranteed or specifically tested for impacts at higher speeds.
There is an additional certification specifically for ebike helmets: NTA 8776. While this certification is not required in the U.S., NTA 8776 helmets pass additional testing against impacts at higher speeds (around 28mph) and cover a larger portion of the head. However, this tends to make them bulkier, heavier, and more expensive.
How do I know what size ebike helmet to buy?
Bike helmets are sized by head circumference. To find this measurement, wrap a flexible tape measure around the largest part of your head, just above your eyebrows. Ensure the tape is level front to back (it should rest above your ears). If you don't have a flexible tape measure, you can wrap a string around your head, mark it, and measure its length. Once you have your head circumference, compare it to bike helmet sizes (Small, Medium, Large, etc.) to find a match. See the “Sizing” tab at the bottom of your helmet’s product page for more info. (Many bike helmets, like our bestselling Silas and Lennon helmets, come in one standard size and have an ErgoKnob dial that lets you fine-tune a snug, comfortable fit.)
Does bike helmet shape matter?
Bike helmet shape is based on discipline, and is less a question of safety and more of comfort and style. For example, helmets designed for road cycling, like Silas, are elongated and aerodynamic to reduce wind resistance, with large vents for cooling during long rides. Mountain bike helmets like Rowan prioritize protection, with extended coverage at the back of the head and a visor to shield the face from sun, rain, and debris. Commuter helmets like Lennon offer a blend of versatile protection and breathability, while cruiser helmets like Remi have a classic skate-style design, with a rounded shape and minimal vents. These focus on style over aerodynamics or specialized features.
Do expensive ebike helmets make a difference?
It depends on what you consider “expensive.” Extensive research shows that in crash testing, most bike helmets offer a similar level of protection, regardless of cost. As long as your bike helmet complies with the U.S. CPSC Safety Standard for Bicycle Helmets, you can feel confident in the safety your helmet provides. As helmet prices increase, you’ll usually see lighter weight and added comfort (ventilation, padding, straps), but there shouldn’t be a difference in safety.
Are cheap ebike helmets safe?
Yes, as mentioned above, even low-cost ($20 to $50) bicycle helmets are safe. According to research by the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute, “When you pay more for a helmet you may get an easier fit, more vents, and snazzier graphics, but the basic impact protection of the cheap helmets [equals] expensive ones. Just look for a helmet that fits you well.”
What is the 2-2-2 rule when fitting a bike helmet?
The 2-2-2 helmet rule, sometimes called the 2V2 rule, is a guideline for fitting a bike helmet. It states that:
The front of the helmet should be no more than two finger widths above your eyebrows. The widest part of the helmet should rest against the back of your head.
The two side straps should fit snugly around each ear in a “V” shape, with the adjustable clip forming the bottom of the V just below the earlobe.
The chin strap should fit snug but still allow you to open your mouth wide. You should be able to fit two fingers between your chin and the strap.
Can I attach a trailer to my ebike?
Yes! It depends on the type of bike and the type of trailer, but the overwhelming majority of retrospecelectric bicycles are compatible with our kids’ trailers, pet trailers, and cargo trailers. A simple, secure coupler fits any bike wheel from 20” to 29” in diameter, though these trailers are not recommended for bikes with thru-axles. See the “Specification” section at the bottom of each trailer’s product page for a full list of compatible ebike models.
What are bike trailers used for?
Bike trailers have many uses. Some riders use them as a safe way to bring young children on bike rides. The American Pediatric Association recommends bicycle-towed trailers over bicycle seats for young children, calling this the safest option for young riders. Others use bike trailers to carry furry friends, and still others use bike trailers to haul cargo, such as camping gear, groceries, or anything else that won’t fit on your rear rack or handlebar basket. Cargo trailers like Rover Hauler are also weatherproof, protecting your belongings from the rain.
How safe are kids’ bike trailers?
Kids’ bike trailers are extremely safe if designed well and used properly. Ultimately, the safety of a kids’ bike trailer comes down to the adult rider who is towing the trailer, but per the American Academy of Pediatrics, bike trailers are much safer than placing a young child in a bike seat. Our Rover Kids’ Bike Trailer features a padded 5-point seat belt harness, reflective fabric, built-in safety reflectors, sturdy steel components, and a high visibility flag, as well as robust 16” wheels and front and side shields to protect kids from wind, rain, and bugs.
Should a child wear a helmet in a bike trailer?
Helmet laws for children vary by state, but regardless, children should always wear a kids’ bike helmet when riding in a bike trailer. Even with careful riding, accidents can happen. A helmet can protect against head injuries in case of a fall, collision, or rollover. Wearing a helmet in the trailer also helps children establish a habit of wearing a helmet whenever they're on wheels, promoting lifelong safety.
Can you put a car seat in a bike trailer?
No, you should not place a car seat in a bike trailer. Kids’ bike trailers have built-in harnesses, so there is no need to add a seat, and doing so will increase the risk of an accident. Our Kids’ Bike Trailers have an integrated five-point padded harness to keep your child secure and comfortable during rides.
What is the best way to carry a dog on an ebike?
The best way to carry a dog on an ebike is in a pet bike trailer, which will provide a stable and enclosed space for them to ride. The best dog bike trailers keep your furry friend secure and comfortable, with integrated leashes, no-slip floors, and weather-resistant canopies to protect them from wind, rain, and direct sunlight. If your dog is extremely small (~10lbs), however, you could consider placing them in a backpack, or an ebike basket, however you should keep in mind that a trailer with a seat belt is the safest option for your furry friend.
What is a bike cargo trailer?
A bike cargo trailer is a towable carrier that attaches to the back of a bicycle or ebike. It allows you to increase your ebike's carrying capacity, transporting items like groceries, beach gear, school supplies, or camping equipment. Unlike pet bike trailers or kids’ bike trailers, a cargo trailer is specifically designed for gear and supplies. They usually connect to your ebike's rear axle using a hitch, and can be quickly removed when not needed. Our Rover Hauler can hold up to 80 pounds of cargo, has interior D-rings to secure your gear and a waterproof cover to protect from rain, and collapses for compact storage when not in use.
How many types of bike locks are there?
The three main types of bike locks are U-locks, cable locks, and chain locks.
U-locks are fixed locks made of a horseshoe-shaped steel shackle. This U-shape helps limit a thief’s ability to leverage the lock apart. U-locks work best with as little free space as possible inside the “U.”
Cable locks are the cheapest and most common type of bike lock. These locks are essentially a long hose-like cable. They’re flexible, adaptable, and reliable “deterrents” for most casual thieves in low-crime areas. However, they don't offer as much durability as U-locks and chain locks, and are vulnerable to cable cutters.
Chain locks are (as the name suggests) similar to cable locks, but instead of reinforced cable they’re made of hardened steel chain links. These locks offer the versatility of cable locks with increased strength and durability.
NOTE: While the above are the three main types of bike locks, there are other styles, such as our Fortitude Folding Bike Lock, which is made of six connecting 5mm steel bars (37” total). These bars fold up into a small bundle when not in use, providing the versatility of a cable or chain lock and the strength of a U-lock without the bulk.
What is the best lock to use when securing your ebike?
It depends on where you’re leaving your ebike. In terms of pure durability, U-locks like Lookout and chain locks like Hero offer the best protection against theft. U-locks are best if you routinely attach your ebike to the same fixed structure, like a light post, and the lock fits well around your ebike’s frame, front wheel, and the structure, leaving little free space. Chain locks offer more versatility and are a good choice if you’re regularly locking your ebike up in different places.
Do bike locks prevent theft?
Certainly! If you use a high-quality ebike lock and follow correct locking techniques, you’ll most likely never have your ebike stolen. While no lock is completely impenetrable, there are too many unlocked or poorly locked ebikes lying around for thieves to target. Most thieves are unlikely to waste time with a well-locked ebike.
Where is the best place to lock an ebike?
It’s best to lock an ebike to a designated bike rack, as opposed to a signpost or street light. Lock the front wheel, frame, and the locking structure together using a U-lock or chain lock, leaving as little gap as possible for a thief to insert a leveraging device (crowbar, etc.). It’s also best to lock your ebike in a well-lit and well-traveled area. Avoid leaving your ebike locked on the sidewalk or street overnight.
What kind of bike pump is best for an ebike?
If you want maximum efficiency and value, consider a compact model like our Aer Portable Air Compressor. This handheld electric air compressor features a pressure range of 0 to 150 PSI with automatic shutoff. It’s also compatible with nearly any inflatable item because it includes a needle valve and Presta and Schrader adapters. Aer also doubles as a power bank for charging your phone, speaker, headphones, or other electronics. With up to 30 minutes of pump time, you never have to worry about being caught out with a deflated tire.
What are the two types of bike pump valves?
There are more than two types of bike pump valve stems, but the most common are Presta and Schrader. You should ensure that any bike pump you purchase is compatible with both valve stems (or comes with adapters, like our Aer Portable Air Compressor).
What do “S” and “P” mean on a bike pump?
These letters refer to the two main types of valve stems—Schrader and Presta—we mentioned above. Schrader valves are the same as those found on car tires, and are most commonly seen on ebikes, mountain and gravel bikes, hybrid bikes, and children's bikes. Presta valves are longer and thinner than Schrader valves and are typically seen on high-pressure tires like road bikes have.
Can I transport ebikes with a car bike rack?
Yes! But because ebikes are much heavier and bulkier than normal bicycles, be sure to purchase an ebike-specific rack, like our Endeavor tray rack. This ebike rack is compatible with all retrospec ebikes, and adjusts to fit most frame shapes and sizes. It can hold two ebikes, accommodates wheel sizes from 20” to 29”, tires up to 5” wide, and bike weights of up to 80 lbs each.
Do I need a hitch to install an ebike rack?
Yes, you’ll need a hitch receiver to install a car ebike rack on your car. There are other options, such as roof racks, trunk-mounted racks, and truck bed racks, but a hitch rack is the most reliable, affordable, and versatile ebike car rack option.
What are ebike foot pegs typically used for?
Ebike foot pegs, usually mounted onto the rear axle or chainstay, are intended as a place for the rider to rest their feet and relax when not pedaling. When powering your retrospecfat tire ebike using the push-to-go throttle, ebike foot pegs offer a comfortable, sturdy resting place for your feet while the electric battery does all the work!
Is it safe to carry a passenger on my ebike using foot pegs?
No, it is not safe to carry a passenger on your ebike using the foot pegs. All of our ebikes have a recommended weight limit, and none are designed to carry two riders, even our electric fat tire bikes with brat seats. The foot pegs are designed for the rider to rest their feet, not for the ebike to accommodate an additional passenger.
How much weight can ebike foot pegs hold?
Each of our Rev Ebike Foot Pegs is rated to accommodate 30 pounds. (Remember, you should not stand up on your ebike’s foot pegs.)
How do I put a water bottle holder on my ebike?
In order to install a water bottle holder on your ebike, first you’ll need a mounting bracket. Made from lightweight, rust-resistant aluminum, these brackets screw onto your ebike’s head tube, providing attachment points for two water bottle cages, one on either side, while still allowing you to attach a bike basket in front. Our mounting brackets are compatible with retrospec Abbot Rev, Beaumont Rev 2, Chatham Rev 2, Chatham Rev+, Judd Rev, Koa Rev 2, Koa Rev+ 2, and Napa Rev ebikes.
What is the best way to carry things on your ebike?
The best way to carry things on your ebike depends on what you want to carry. There are a variety of ways to carry your belongings, including bike bags, baskets, and bike cargo trailers. But no matter what you’re carrying, a rear rack is a good idea. Ebike rear racks are a requirement if you want to attach panniers and trunk bags to your ebike. They are also necessary if you want to attach baskets like our EverythingBin. Simply put, a rear rack is the best starting point to transform your ebike into a versatile commuter!
What is an ebike rear rack?
An ebike rear rack is a frame-like structure attached to the rear of an electric bike, designed to provide a platform for carrying cargo. Typically made of metal, the best ebike rear racks allow riders to securely transport items using panniers, trunk bags, and baskets. A good rear rack increases the ebike's utility, transforming it from a simple mode of transportation to a versatile cargo-carrying vehicle. A rear rack's robust design is crucial, especially on ebikes, as they often carry heavier loads and require stable support to ensure safe and efficient transport.
Do ebikes need special rear racks?
Some standard rear racks can be fitted onto ebikes, but it’s best to use racks designed explicitly for ebikes. EBike-specific rear racks are engineered to handle the additional weight that ebikes usually carry. They feature stronger materials and more robust construction to ensure stability and safety, especially when carrying heavier loads. They’re also designed to integrate with your ebike's frame and electrical system, providing a more secure, aesthetically pleasing fit. So although it’s not always mandatory, using a rear rack designed for ebikes provides optimal support and safety.
Do all ebike rear racks fit all ebikes?
Not all ebike rear racks will fit all ebikes. With retrospec, it’s easy to find out which racks work for your bike. If you see an ebike rear rack you like, the product description will list the models of retrospec ebikes it’s compatible with, as will the “Specifications” section at the bottom of the page.
Do any ebikes come with rear racks?
Yes! Many ebikes designed for commuting will come with a rear rack pre-installed. Our electric city bike, Beaumont Rev 2, comes with a rear rack, as do our electric commuter bikes.
How much weight can ebike rear racks hold?
The weight ebike rear racks can hold will vary depending on make and model. retrospec ebike racks range between 22 lbs and 55 lbs in carrying capacity. See your rear rack’s product page for specifications.
What are the benefits of using bike lights?
The main benefits of using bike lights are enhanced safety and visibility. You see better, and others (car drivers, cyclists, pedestrians) can see you better, too! A white front light illuminates the path ahead, allowing you to see hazards like potholes or debris, while also making you visible head-on to traffic and pedestrians. Meanwhile, a red rear light or reflector makes you conspicuous to drivers approaching from behind. Using the best bike lights—which is often required by law after dark or in low visibility conditions like rain and fog—will dramatically improve your safety!
What are the best electric bicycle lights?
The best lights for electric bikes will excel in several key areas. Sufficient brightness (measured in lux or lumens) is crucial—enough to illuminate your path and make you highly visible. Look for wide visibility angles to ensure you're seen from multiple directions. A practical battery life that matches your typical ride duration, (ideally with USB recharging), is also essential. The mounting system should be secure, easy to use, and stable on your ebike. Good weather resistance (indicated by an IP rating like IPX4 or higher) ensures reliability in rain, and multiple modes, such as high beam, low beam, or flashing, offer versatility for different conditions.
How to choose an ebike light?
Choosing the right bike light involves thinking about your needs. First, consider where you ride. For well-lit urban areas, focus on lights that make you highly visible to others. For unlit roads or trails, prioritize a powerful front light with a beam pattern to illuminate your path effectively. As noted above, match the light's battery life to your typical ride duration, and consider the convenience of USB recharging. Also, ensure the mounting system is compatible with your ebike, and choose lights with adequate weather resistance (IP rating).
How far should an ebike headlight be seen?
Laws vary, but most U.S. states require that a front bicycle light be visible from ~500 feet ahead. Likewise, a good standard for the rear is visibility from 300 feet behind. You should also aim for ~200 feet of visibility from the sides.
What age can you use a child bike seat?
The age at which a child can ride in a kids’ bike seat varies, but according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, “children who are old enough to sit well unsupported and whose necks are strong enough to support a lightweight helmet” can ride in a rear-mounted child bike seat. Depending on your child's physical development, this age could be anywhere from nine months to several years old.
What is the safest bike seat for kids?
A kids’ bike seat is only as safe as the adult operating the bicycle, but The New York Times rated the Thule Yepp Maxi as the “best rear-mount kids’ bike seat” on the market, praising it for its “durability, easy installation, and stability in motion.” Featuring a robust outer shell and plush foam padding, this child seat is shock-absorbent and extremely comfortable, with a five-point safety harness and childproof buckle. It also sports a built-in reflector and safety light attachment point for added visibility.
Can kids ride on ebikes?
Legally, it depends on the child’s age, the type of ebike (Class 1, 2, or 3), and the state or city you live in. Every U.S. state has slightly different ebike laws and regulations. Some areas have stricter laws for Class 3 ebikes than for Class 2 and 1 ebikes, for example. That said, there is a higher risk of severe injury and death for ebike riders than regular bike users, simply due to the speeds at which ebikes can travel, so use extra caution when letting your child operate an ebike, even if it’s legal in your state or city.
What is the best way to ebike with a child?
Kids’ bike seats and bike trailers are both great ways to ride your ebike with a child. If you’re looking to ride with two children at once, a bike trailer like Rover or Rover Plus is a must. For a single child, a child bike seat is a better choice.
What type of bike bag is best for commuting on an ebike?
For commuting on an ebike, panniers or trunk bags are the best choice due to their ample storage and weather resistance. They’re ideal for carrying larger items like laptops, books, and groceries, and they evenly distribute weight. Meanwhile, over-the-shoulder messenger bags offer stylish accessibility for essentials, while handlebar bags provide quick access to small items. Frame bags are useful for tools and spares. All in all, consider your typical load and weather conditions, but realize that panniers generally offer the most practicality for daily bicycle commuting.
Do bike panniers fit on all ebikes?
Not all panniers will fit on all ebikes, but our Sidekick Duo Saddlebag Panniers are designed to fit the majority of modern bicycle rear racks, including retrospecebike rear racks like Haul, Haul Lite, and Haul Wide.
Do I need a rear bike rack to install panniers?
Yes, you’ll need a rear rack on your bicycle to install any panniers or trunk bags. The good news is that our panniers and trunk bags are designed to fit almost any modern rear rack, both ebike rear racks and the racks found on pedal bicycles like our city bikes.
